With the 2.0 engine £500 isn't going to get you very far, they are pretty strong engines producing roughly 150bhp from the factory. There aren't any inlet manifolds for them as the standard inlet manifold is pretty good. Cams on thier own will make the engine run a bit funny for not much avail. I would advise you to save up some more money and think about getting a throttle body set up. You can get a self fit kit for roughly £1800, with that you will be pushing between 180bhp and 200bhp....

nitrous is probably the best option if you don't want to spend more again later on.
keep efficiency for normal driving untill you want a bit of a blat or race.

if not i'd say probably an sbd manifold and keep saving for cams and programable chip

Those engines don't respond well to chip tuning unless its in conjunction with other mods.

can anyone recommend a decent NOS kit for an XE? what kind of power can I get for what kind of money, and between the wet and dry options (cant remember which ones harder to fit ) whats the price difference (roughly) in getting them fitted professionally.

Wizards of nos are pretty much the only kits that are insurance friendly in the UK. I like ZEX kits but their tanks are not the safest. You can get a wizards of nos street blaster kit for under £500, you can run that on up to 150bhp but personally I would only go for 50-75bhp jets on an xe. Avoid dry kits, sure the wet kits are slightly harder to install but they are much safer on your engine. I charge £150 for fitting with 1 year warranty on labour.

NB you can run megatune through a laptop while your driving if you have a megasquirt ecu. I'm sure there are others out there as well.

dosent need setting up all the time
the Bucket (my old corsa on carbs) was set up and was fine for over 12months, and did 100miles to £10 (if you kill it then like any car will drink fuel)
