right i have a 16v x14xe here

its had a new belt fitted now on the cam marks 1 sits a lil high and other sits a lil low oly a few mm

is this normal

think i got my x14 ones lined up properly... took forever, missus timed my xe up

if the engine is left for a while they can look like they are a tooth out...

turn the crank over about 10 times with a spanner and then line up the the mark on the crank and see what the cams are like then....

can you get the cams out of roataion or do they only operate 1 full cycle to 1 full turn?

take it the crank is ligned up correctly, is the belt to tight, to slack?

belt is fine, crank is spot on

just one timing mark sitts a mm or so high and the other a mm low

most do, the one in my gsi does, the timing belt i did last week did, the one on my 1.4 sport does......

the cams work in 1 full revolution yes... did you try rotating the crank... i nearly killed the guy i bought the 1.6 engine off cos i thought he sold me a engine that was a tooth out... its just the belt had slackened off for being left up...
