My mate has a 1.4 16 valve Tigra.
It makes a really tappetty type noise when it's on, not just when first started, and it gets louder with the RPM.
Her Dad reckons it could be the camshafts 
Any input appreciated

could just need an oil change mate,
or some oil in it? - as i found this to be the case with mine.

Nah the oil was changed 2k miles ago with some high quality stuff and I checked it and the level is fine. No oil warning lights either.
She drives it really hard, even from cold though if that gives any clues?

Even a worn thurst pad or rocker can do it, but probaly tappets. I'm finding out after fitting a 285 cam to my 1.2 8 valve, i did'nt bother to change the rockers with it and now the bit*h is tapping like a mother fecker, as the old rockers had took the shape of the old cam. BTW i have'nt worked on a vaux 16v engine but you may have enough room to replace the tappets with a rocker remover tool, if not then just compress valves, lift out the rockers, slip out the cam and replace tappets and build bck up, save's you having to removed head, new head gasket, new head bolts, new cam belt and so on.

this dont sound good mate has the engine only just started doin it since the oil change ?? if so the oil u put in could posabley be to thin or could be sinthetic (which it probebly is if it was exspencive ) and probably needs mineral oil . i made that mistake with my bro's astra 16v when i got the wrong oil from work !!

Nah it's the right oil!
It was running fine for 1800 miles, has only started in the last 200!

this happens on the x14xe, same occured on my Corsa SRi. They use hydraulic tappets which don't require the valve clearances to be set up, however if they wear past a certain point they will still tap.
