I've gotten hold of a series of rather old adventure games, but I'm having trouble getting them to work!

Whenever I run the required .exe file the monitor just gives me a "signal out of reach" error and then turns off! I then have no choice but to kill the power...

Any help would be appreciated!

The resolution and refresh rate the game is trying to play at isn't supported by the monitor.
You'll have to have a look how to change the resolution without doing it in game.

Advanced stuff like resolution changes is not a possibility in old games like these I'm afraid...
I'll have to hook the computer up to an old CRT monitor if I want to play then...
