What would cause access problems on a wireless network, both computers show that they are connected to the router but i can't share files or my t'interweb connection. I'm using a belkin wireless g router (connected by cable to the laptop) and usb dongle (i appreciate its not the best kit). Could it be that the vesion of xp on the laptop needs updates etc downloading, and the desktop unit is all bang up to date?

its driving me nuts now

what are you trying to do exactly? share/access files on both PCs?

I presume your connected to the router no problem? i.e. you can access the internet net ok?

If so, right click on any folder, and click sharing. then simply enable sharing and ignore the warning if you havent done so already.

You will probably have to turn off your firewalls too.

thats a good place to start. it wont be anything to do with the kit or updates etc.

thats ok.
just sounds like you havent got IP addresses setup and DHCP is not switched on.

Do you know the IP address of your router? (i presume so).
Two options:
1
connect to your router, and search for DHCP and enable it.

2
IF you know your router ip address is 192.168.0.1
then go into your PC network settings and setup your IP address as:

192.168.0.x (where x is pick any number between 3 and 50 for simplicity)

Same for your other machine, but dont pick the same number.

Your subnet mask should be
255.255.255.0

and your gateway address is 192.168.0.1 (or what ever your router ip address happens to be).

Your PC ip address should be exactly the same ip address as your router except the last digit.

click ok, and you should be up and running (could enter your DNS if you know them from the ISP).

i would personally choose option 2 because it would be more useful in the future, if you know your own pc address you can start forwarding ports on the router for games and applications etc.

is one PC connected? (the cable connected one)

192.168.2.1 for belkin gateway

with belkin routers, you sometimes need to clone your MAC address
