Travelling down the dual carriageway today I heard a bang, saw a bit of smoke, then another bang, alot of smoke and a klunk klunk klunk, in short my engine has had it. I even found part of it inside the headlight of the guy behind me. But lets get to the pont, I have been looking around for a replacemnet engine (I have a '99 1.6 sport with a X16XE engine) but they seem to be pretty rare, which is what the garages that I rang told me. Does anyone know of any engines for sale, or could I stick another engine in? I have considered getting a c20xe, but that would require a new ecu and alot more complications I believe, and I just want something that works. What would you guys suggest?

well thanks for the quick replies, I was told those engines were hard to find, but oh well. What sort of price would I be looking at for a reconditioned/not x16xe, and what sort of mileage should I be looking for?

what broke? had the head off yet?
if the head is ok just get a low milage bottom end from any 1995 onwards 1.6 16v vauxhall. they are all the same.

Haven't had it in bits yet, but I expect the top end might just be ok, I am pretty sure it was the bottom of the con-rod that was in the guys headlight and there was no visible damage above or below the engine, so it may well be OK, unless the valves have bent or are they also part of the bottom end? I have done some research on engines but I still don't really know much about em, so is a broken con-rod likely to affect the head?

as dave said, you can use a astra 1.6 engine, you will have to swap the inlet manifold over though and will have 6bhp less power

well if the head is ok, just replace the bottom end. far easier and cheaper.

OK I still haven't got my car back and am getting really stressed, at the minute it runs ok but idles at 3,500rpm when it has warmed up. So it has been passed onto a vauxhall specialist garage as the existing one who fit the engine can't figure it out. The OBD said it was the idle air control valve, so they replaced it but it hasn't solved the problem... now they are saying they have to take the head off, clean the valves, replace the gaskets, and skim the head, at a cost of £300 and I am not certain this will fix the problem... so i thought f*** it i will get a loan and have a 2.0litre fitted. But my insurance company (quinn direct) won't give me a quote until i have the work done, which is useless... i am 18 in a group A insurance area, 1 years NCB, full license held for 6 months.... this is going to sound like a crazy question, but is anyone here in the same sort of group as me who could give me a very rough idea of insurance? I am currently paying £900/annum.

Well I have taken my car back as it is idling at 3,500rpm but I will just have to cope with it unitl I can afford to get a 2.0 conversion.
