Like said, development on plasma screens are still happening, just as they are on LCD - hence why they are slowly catching up to plasmas on the constrast ratio. But its also a reason why there are 1080p plasmas 
Eitherway, as its pretty difficult to capture 1080p let alone watch it (and isn't bandwidth near twice that of 1080i?) and the cost involved to do both of these, i wouldn't worry about it for the next few years.
Anyways, its a sore subject between the two different camps - and majority of people jump on bandwagons without knowing the technical reasons behind both types of screens (and the variations), so like said search around here, do a google and read some propper AV forums or LCD/Plasma sites

As Dom said really, both have their advantages/disadvantages etc. Best thing to to is get onto AV Forums check out the numerous threads on the Tv's you're interested in. whole wealth of info on there.

I have watched both an LCD and a Plasma, if im honest, I couldnt tell the difference. Dont know if the plasma wasnt set up properly?!?!

imo it's useless trying to compare the two. LCDs are notorious for being too dark and this is something plasmas are better at. Saying that LCDs are catching up in that area.
Screen burn is an issue with some plasmas, but it's not as big an issue as many make out. LCDs don't suffer from this.
As always, its a case of you get what you pay for. If you go for something like a Bravia then you can expect things like contrast levels and viewing angles to be good. If you go for a cheap LCD then these details can let it down. Same with a plasma.

Usually you'll find that plasmas do blacks, LCDs do grays (there improving) - its about the only major difference you can spot, especially in a dark room, a black screen on the LCD is like a sore thumb.
And like said, 32" or below is probably LCD territory with cost in mind, above 32" you need to look at plasmas as there cheaper than LCD at those sizes.
