Do/can they break and not give an accurate reading of the temperature on the dials of the car?

I did a journey that took about half an hour today and the car wasn't on 90c even by the time i'd driven there and back (I was away from the car for about 20 mins).

Would it be a faulty CTS or something else? Thermostat on the engine stuck open?

Way to test it, is take it off .. Bring it inside .. Boil the kettle, put the water in a cup/somethings to house the thermostat ... Dip it in and see if it opens and closes wen u take it out ...
