Is it possible to do the paperclip test on the 1.0 12v? (Corsa B) As I'll be driving along, and suddenly I could put my foot down and not go anywhere at all then the EML comes on until I take it easy again. Any clues as to what it could be anyone?

There are quite a few sensors on the engine to go wrong. Gest thing to do is cough up the £40 to get it diagnosed by Vauxhall, that will save much fucking about and probably a bit of cash in the long run...

Surely you can go to an independent garage that has a diagnostic machine and not necessarily Vauxhall? An independent garage would be much cheaper...

Needs to be done on a proper tech II machine which only Vauxhall dealers own really. It won't cost £70 for a diagnostic either. It will cost an hours labour which is not £70.
