..When cold. Started doing it yesterday evening, ever since i bought the car there has been slight overfuelling on no.4 cylinder i think(one nearest dizzy block) and has always felt slightly rough for a couple of seconds when cold but always cleared up. This misfire, at least i think its a misfire, shakes the whole car and is present up to 3k but never does it when moving. My temp gauge is also rather erratic and moves between 88-91oC within the space of 30seconds. Would the CTS be the possible cause of all this mayhem?

speedo will just be the cable, no issue there, just get a new speedo cable & fit it...

engine does sound like cts though, but the temp gauge on the dash is from a seperate sensor, so might be worth checking plugs, leads...

ok the speedo thing is probably my fault as i wobbled it about quite alot trying to plug it back in to the clocks. Im gonna start it up tomorrow and pull the lead from the overfuelling cylinder and see what happens. Cheers Paul.

cheers, its a 16xe engine. Pulled the no.3 lead out which was the one overfuelling and the engine note changed. Could it be the injector?

they were changed about 1.5k ago but before i changed them i noticed no.3 plug had overheated a little bit(white casing gone brown near the threads) and was abit sooty. The newer one has gone the same i believe.

The leads also look spanking new. The engine has just gone onto 39k

if it does it when cold, could be:

air intake/vacuum system leak
idle air control (iac) valve
throttle position (tp) sensor
ecu (doubtful)

and given the temp going up & down like you say, i'd hazard it more a leak on the intake or a vacuum leak somewhere...
