i know AGP.... bla bla bla.
but for a friend who just wants a semi decent graphics card for around £80, any suggestions?

BFG GeForce 7600 GS OC 512MB DDR2 HDTV/DVI (AGP) - Retail £96 inc vat.
That has to be the way to go?

depends, there was two agp style slots both varing in different voltages.

One was a 2x/4x and the other a 4x/8x

I have the PCIX version of that card. Does the job, though tell your mate to get a different cooler for it because the one on it is noisy as fook and gave me a headache.
