You can get optical cables that are 10/20/30m long.
As for getting optical out of a TV - Very few if any will have this function. The only time its really worth it is if you have HDMI coming from a DVD player etc but then the DVD player probably has optical out you can use

the tv i'm getting has optical out. My plan is to run optical out from the tv to my amp so i'm getting digital sound and then run another optical out from the dvd direct into amp as well. So now i'm got digital from both.
The problem was the tv is gonna be mounted on the middle of a wall and the amp is gonna sit in the corner so i needed a optical lead atleast 3.5m long.

yeah checkd the ebay link but i don't really need it that long it just means more wires i have to try and hide lol
At the moment the source into the tv it just freeview. This is until i replace my dvd player with a HD or Blu ray player (Depending on which way it goes) or might even get a games console for HD content

My TV has optical out, but when connected to my surround sound it doesnt gove Dolby5.1 or DTS. I have to plug the optical lead into my Xbox 360 before I can get Dolby or DTS.
