Right, a neighbour knocked on my door yesterday asking if his female friend could use my BT wireless connection to connect to the net from his house.
Obviously I said no, and thought that would be the end of it, however I've come home from work today and have had loads of trouble connecting, and couldn't gain access at all for an hour. this is the first time I've ever had a problem and seems a bit of a coincidence after he came round yesterday. It seems ok at the minute, but is there any way he/she could of hacked my connection and is it possible for me to prove it?

what router you using? And what security settings you using?
You can normally log in to the router and check the access logs to see who has tried/connected to your wireless.

take the telephone cable out the back of it, as stop anyone using it them until you can access it - try doing this using a cable rather than wirelessly.

You can normally force a reset of the password etc by pressing a button.
Once this is done you should change the password to a secure one and then you want to set security in the form of a WEP or WPA key also its handy to allow access by MAC address only as thats another way to secure it.
But anyone who has half a clue about wireless can get past those things quite easily.
Best bet is to connect just using a wire and not wirelessly

Hard reset on the router using a pin.
I would consider reporting him too.

P.S. Don't use WEP, use WPA2 if your hardware supports it.
Turn on MAC filtering and hide the SSID, I would be surprised if anyone gained access to your network after that.

Cheers all.
Reset the router and changed password. MAC filtering turned on and SSID hidden.
Thanks.

I'd keep the SSID on TBH and call it "Fuck Off!"

I'm shocked how many people on my road have un-secured wireless networks, my PS3 keeps trying to connect to them when I switch off my Acess Point.

Some people can't be arsed to even change the standard username and password to the router. I could have locked a few people out of their own router. Yes you can always hard reset them but it's a pain to set back up. Also if your clueless in the first place about security I doubt a hard reset would be the first think you think of.

Funny as I have to, I use the lan cable to my pc for the home. Only switch on the wireless when the gf brings her laptop and then it's set to 506 bit
