Boy, 16, shot dead in play area
A murder inquiry is under way after a 16-year-old boy was shot dead in a play area in South Yorkshire.
The boy's body was found at a recreation area on Nottingham Cliff in the Burngreave area of Sheffield on Wednesday night.
Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene at 1930 BST. Officers said the unnamed victim was thought to be a local resident.
Armed police are patrolling the area in an effort to reassure residents.
Chief Supt Jon House, commander of the Sheffield area of South Yorkshire Police, said a formal identification had yet to take place, but specialist officers were talking to the boy's family.
He said the offenders were believed to be local and detectives wanted any witnesses to come forward.
Witnesses
"It is only with the help of the community, who are obviously very shocked by this crime, that we will be able to bring those responsible to justice.
"Any information will be treated confidentially and appropriate protection will be offered to witnesses who assist."
Mr House said gun crime in the city was very rare, with one other fatal shooting in the city in the last 18 months.
"However, the community is understandably concerned and further patrols supported by armed officers will be operating in the area."
The incident happened less than a mile from the scene of a shooting in March which left a 53-year-old taxi driver dead.
Father-of-five Younis Khan was shot as he drove along Scott Road, in the Pitsmoor area.
The neighbouring Burngreave, Pitsmoor and Spital Hill areas have witnessed a number of shooting incidents in recent years.
Police and council leaders are adamant the city does not have a gun problem on the scale of other major cities

there was a torched car about 10 metres from my girlfriends house the otherday. Always a nice feature. She lives in Netherthorpe, is that a really rough area or just slightly rough?
Just read that its the red light district.

all places have nice parts and bad parts tho
I lived in Sheffield for 4 years and have lived near boro for 20 years
I would say both have good parts and bad parts, but boro is number 1 and sheffield is not on the list
also been to edinbrough a few times and seen nothing but fights and homeless people
all a load of crap if you ask me, not much truth to it

Stoke used to be the worst- its 13th worst now - follow suit Middlesborough; just knock all of the slums down and build appartments, fill them with Afghans and you too could move up the table

oro is totally different as to what has been shown on this prgram. For a starter the places they were showing, billingham etc are not even in Middlesbrough.
Northernist.
Middlesbrough is under a good development program atm.
