when cold, the engine will idle just above 1000rpm - when it usually always just below 1000. its never done this before - then after a bit of driving it will idle normally. however when it is idleing funny, in 1st gear i go up to about 2 or 3000 revs, dip the clutch then it will go back down to 1,500 hover there for half a second then go back down to where (or close to) where it should be.

is this an excuse to scrap it?

Mine used to hover at 1200 when the clutch was pushed in and then drop to 800ish.

Sounds ok to me.

Is it idleing up and down?

mine went the other month and it stayed on 2500/3000 revs so I got it changed

but sometimes when i dip the clutch and brake the revs go up to just below 2k

It's located on the side of the TB. Right hand side of cylinder head.
