Now, I'm sure I remember playing loads of over 15- over 18 games when I was a little kid (11 years old or younger) lol ... and it hasn't fucked me up
Like I remember playing carmageddon, where you drive around running over people (bonus points for grannies!) and all the doom / quake / etc... the grand theft auto (original etc) ... etc etc.
But my cousin sometimes comes over (think he's 10-11?) - and just see's games like GTA Vice City or GTA San Andreas or whatever... and is like 'Can I play this?'
I'm like SURE! ... he puts it on... drives about ... some pedestrian shouts at him 'Watch where you're going Dick head!' ... he's like 'did he just call him a dick?'
Then it's like 'FUCK OFF!!' (character shouts in game) he's like 'haha Fuck off.. fuck off!' ...
Then like running over people / shooting / chainsawing people and laughing
I bet he told his Dad told him everything I let him play Just glad he didn't find the strip club in GTA VC

I've owned all the GTA games and I'm certain I was younger than 18 when the first one came out. My parents weren't bothered, if they had any doubts then they'd have to question their parenting IMO.
Didn't do me much harm.

Still had the content though.
Carmageddon being one, that game was pure wrongness!

yeah but it was easier to distance yourself from it back then, now its getting more immersive kids feel like its really happening, u see them sat in the dark mesmerised by the game

yeh but I see what lee_wee is saying... like it was very pixalated / cartoonish... Where as running down someone in GTA is like hitting a real person (in a way).
Also nath I'm not talking about being 15 and playing a 18 game, I'm talking about being say 10 - 11 and playing some thing violent / offensive language etc.
Like I played duke 3d and doom and wolf 3d etc... but they were quite cartooney and obviously not real at all.

I played other games, but I can't remember what they were. Thats how little an impact they had on me.

You should judge it by the kid, not the certificate.
I know you can't do that in the shops, and not every kid is the same, so that wouldn't work for the ratings people, but some kids are mature enough to watch a film for an agegroup older than them, it should be the same with games.
Up to the parents IMO, and I remember playing certain 'shocking' games when I was younger, without them making me want to carve people up at weekends too much.

Didnt fuck me up (too much ) i always laugh when i read in the paper "12yr old kills family because he played GTA once"
I dunno whats funnier the fact they blame the game or the way they say these games shouldnt be allowed to be released Are you stupid it says 18+ on the box, how is it the developers fault he got hold of it, surely its the parents?
You dont let a 10yr old watch Porn and then blame Ron Jeremy when he gets some lass pregnant

What disturbs me is that he hi jacks the train... in GTA... then goes 'watch this, I'm gonna de rail it!'
Then laughs as the carriages all fall off the track (and the potential hundreds of game characters die!) jokes jokes.

He sounds like a psychopath in the making Paul. Better get him playing My Little Pony/Barbies cup cake factory instead

what robin said.
i also found that loads of people see the certificates as not as important on games than films when you're buying them. could always buy GTA or whatever but try and get an 18 film they'd be asking for ID. i don't think i've ever been ID'd for a game in my whole life.

I played all the GTA games from when they first came out ! I got GTA 2 for my 10th birthday in 1999
tbf its up to the parents, no one else. If i had turned into a mad murdering pshycopath then maybe there would be something to worry about

i think its all down to how sensible, down to earth your kid is, when letting play, watch films that are 18 etc.
just a bit of common sense is needed to judge weather your kid is responsible enough to play these games.
