hey guys i have given in to my dad telling me to try out ubuntu for a while
it took my f00king ages to install flash so i could go onto youtube lol
am not very good when it comes to Ubuntu its very different to say the least
my question is could someone please tell me a step by step guide to how to get java on my pc

You want to just run stuff or start programming?
Run stuff you need the runtime files.
Programming you need a compiler.
Both I think are available from java.sun.com

sorry mate i wasnt very clear, i want to run staff (little java games)
i have it downloaded etc but not sure if it is correctly installed mate
am a bit confussed when it comes to UBUNTU

Which version of ubuntu? On the latest version 7.04 if you make sure you are running the latest version of firefox it should automatically prompt and install the plugin when you visit a java site.

i belive it did prompt me to install it
i done so and now it just hangs doesnt do anything

go into the package manager and do a search for java, look for 1 named java-5 or 6 right click and do a complete package re-installation

I thought it came bundled with the Sun JRE?
If not then you have to do the annoying typing in shit in the command propt thing.
But open up Firefox and type aboutlugins in the address bar to double check if it is there or not...
