Yo,
question, just bought a HD DVD player for the old xbox and was browsing some sites for cheap films. I see a lot of films that are "classics" like "the thing" from 1982. My question is how are these in HD as they wasnt filmed in HD!
Are they just upscaled....no idea what this is but i assume it fills in the gaps to make it 720/1080 resolution to give a clearer picture.

They still look quite old, but they are much better than the originals.

To get technical about it, the resolution on old film is massive, much higher than current 'hi def' or anything we'll have for the next 10+ years so when scanned in to be digitised and put on a disc they are at least as good as films filmed in HD today.
More recent recordings but still on film actually have much lower resolution than these old ones but iirc are still perfectly adequate to be scanned in for current HD.

^^ What John said
Was watching a documentary on some channel a while back about it where they were explaining why they were able to show old films like The Italian Job in HD etc.
