Author setting speedo up, whats a good measure?.. 2500rpm 1st?

2500rpm 1st gear, 10mph?..
3rd gear 30mph?..

Only accurate way ive found is using a sat nav. Going by RPM in gear leaves you open to different sized wheels making a difference and even how much tread you have left on the front tyres. And the rev counter is always a few hundred RPM out
