hey people
can anyone help?
i have a 12" sub, 5" kappas up front all amped up.
i also have some infinity Refrence on the shelf (these are run of HU)
i am looking to improve on my mid bass.
i have thought about using 8" subs already but wasnt too sure.
at the moment i have only two RCA outputs (on HU) which means i'm 1 RCA short.
can i get an RCA splitter?
also can you get 8" free air subs? i would ditch the rear speakers for these instead.
any help much appreciated

CDT audio 8" subs, not free air though! but use very small box, .25 cubic feet! these are wot i have, as i have 2 15" with very poor mid bass!! but they aint installed yet. i can let you know when they are, wot they are like!!!

what type of amp should i use?
a 4ch stereo?
mono block?
im looking at gettin one or two, not sure yet.
at the moment i have two amps (sub+comps)
i really dont want that many amps in the boot.
Bluecorsasxi: what are the dimensions of the box then roughly?
i know theres something on the net where you can enter details, which then are worked out to how big your box should be.
does anyone know of this site?

it should be around 25.4cm(10inch) x 25.4 cm x 11cm deep(4.3inch) for these 8 inch subs!!
i know of one site which works out the box size,

CORS4 - how have you set up all your speakers, i.e what crossover settings do you have? Ive found that crossover settings and phasing can make a BIG improvement to the midbass department without the need for adding extra kit. I would say why not change to a 6.5" 2way component set instead of the 5" you have? You'd need a good crossover with steep slopes for the 8" drivers that you install and you'd need to bandpass them for sure. Where were you going to fit them, i'd say front door builds are the best option but add plenty of Dynamat or similar and just make sure you run the midbass in stereo...

i've just made some door builds, so changing the comps are out of the question.
i want to get an eq but there's a piorneer md unit i've seen that has an built in eq. so should i just get the head unit? or both?
the hd unit also has 3 rca which then would enable me to use 8" subs if needed.
i'm not sure what i should set the crossovers at?!
whats the reccomended setting for comps?
whats the rec.... setting for a 12" sub?
whats bandpass? is that where the sub is entirely in a box but with ports?

You may not need an EQ, first goal is to set gains then crossovers then phasing and then EQ if necessary.
These are rough settings, EVERY system is different as is personal taste...
I'd run youre front components 90-100Hz highpass with a slope of at least 12dB per octave or ideally 24dB per octave, any steeper IS overkill.
Now i'd run youre sub upto meet youre components so 90-100Hz but obviousley lowpass, with a crossover slope of 12dB per octave. Youre sub will kick quite a lot having quite a high crossover setting. If youre sub is in a small sealed box then you may find its quite 'peaky' around 80-90Hz which would make it sound slightly out, subs generally dont re-create high notes very well and you may here it ever-so-slightly struggling. If you had an eq on youre sub this would be the perfect place to cut - put a 'dip' in the frequency.
Bandpass is where you crossover a speaker at both ends, so you lowpass AND highpass it - ideal for midbass as you dont want it playing into your midrange or subbass. I'd generally say for midbass that you want to Lowpass it at 150-180Hz and Highpass it at 70-90Hz so that it plays the frequencies in between (mid-bass). I'd also recomend as steep a crossover slope as possible - at least 24dB.
Always play around with youre phasing aswell. For me phasing is the hardest to set up, even when youre using steep slopes and crossed-over correctly.
I tried to find as many songs with mid-bass as possible to set mine. I recently changed the phasing of both my subs after previousley thinking i'd set them correctly, they are now the opposite or 180 degrees to my components and im hearing parts of songs that i'd never noticed before!
