My shower broke, so we turned the water off to replace it. The main valve in was ok, but every other valve was seized solid.

We only turned them 6 months ago, but we also live in a hard water area, living on the plate of chalk called the north downs.

But we were lucky. My dad (good ol dads) drained both tanks, cut out all the seized valves, put a few more in, and now the showers working fine, and we can stop our water again. If we had had a leak, we couldn't stop the water till the tanks were empty.

So do yourselves a favour, its coming to winter, flick those water valves closed, then open again to prevent a serious headache and massive problems.

WE're lucky the shower broke, and we found it before something went wrong.

Great bit of advice this.

I had a fault on my boiler last week, due to loss of pressure. Went the turn the valves to re pressurise it, and both were siezed. Managed to work them free tho.

You should always back all gate typr valves off about a quater of a turn too prevent this. Although, as you said is a good idea to periodicly open and close them to free evreything up...

So leave them alone
Let water surplus build up.
Which locks the vavles
Which means you can't turn the water off...

Somehow, i don't quite agree with you

Isolation valves don't leak if they are fitted right.

our boiler went shagged about 10 days ago, somewhere was leaking and had rotted the side of the boiler away the plumber knocked it with his elbow and it pretty much went through the side of it

been replaced now though and the house is nice and warm again

Funny thing is you do, all that healthy scottish mountin water.

Ours comes through chalk pits, it cloggs up lots of things quickly.

Still, better than london, recycled piss water. I've never know water to taste so bad, even after boiling...

Thank god im not there and can drink normal cups of tea now
