We're picking up a plank of oak to go across the top of our fireplace in the bedroom.
We were hoping to find something else, more along the lines of a railway sleeper, but no luck.
So we were planning on attempting to 'distress' the bit of wood that we get to make it look 'old'
Anyone know the best way of doing this? Any tips/suggestions?
Cheers

My grandad's fireplace has a railroad sleeper across the top and down the sides.
Looks awesome, but I appreciate this post is of no use to you. Sorry

I bought some from www.marshall-trailers.co.uk a few years back.
They're on the A96 between Dyce and Kirkhill Forrest.

Hack it up with a chisel/small axe , but not to the point where it looks to have been vandalised !
Had a customer want this done with their ceiling joists for the "rustic" look , worked very well though.

Yeah just beat it with various things, angle grinder works well! As it burns and marks at the same time

Tie it to the back of the car and drag it round the track

Depending on how you want it, either attack it with a chisel or plane to get rid of the newness, then sand it. Then give it 2 different colour coats of paint, sandpaper corners and edges and places likely to have been worn, this will expose the colour underneath. you may need to do a few practice runs on offcuts first to get the effect you want. in my house we took out a wall and had a RSJ up to support the cieling. We clad it in pine then attacked it with a plane and chisel then stained it. looks really good and people cant tell unless you really study it that it is a fake
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

Travis Perkins sell reclaimed and new railway sleepers.
May I ask how you're planning on fixing it to the wall; only because I'm planning something similar but not sure wether to run two brick pillars or to chase it into the wall or to use heavy duty coach bolts

it'll be set into the wall and secured to posts.... also have some support from 50mm deep facings running up the sides.
Its a heavy bastard though so i'll try and hollow out the back a bit to help
