i have a wireless modem but hes old fashioned and wont use the wireless
is the other alternative just a case of plugging an ethernet cable from back of my modem and connect to his comp?

Wireless is unsecure, typically 54 Mbps and half duplex. I still use it though

wpa is pretty secure, just don't use a wpa password that is in the dictionary (so a mixture of upper/lowercase and numbers). Not many people are willing to brute force a wpa considering it could take a few years...

Yes, guy has a wireless internet connection, somebody else in his house wants to use the connection but doesn't want to use wireless.
