if you've got it early shouldn't cost too much, depends if garage or you do it!
if gone, ££££!!
take your oil cap off, look for a mayo type substance on that, then look in your coolent bottle see if theres any blobs or again mayo type stuff!
your exhaust might be giving out alot of crap, but alot of people think that they have problems when really it's just cold mornings!
compression test will be best, but check for mayo!

just looking at a 1.6 sport and he thinks the gasket is going as he said this " Unfortunately I think the head gasket may be going. It starts first turn of the key everytime and runs fine but the coolant seems a bit oily and scummy, and there is a small amount of water coming from the exhaust. "

If price is taking that into consideration or try and bargain abit more
Whenn i "thought" mine was on way out (X14XE same as X16XE) i got quoted £150 all out, that was my local garage, course may differ slight with yourself so if you'd take it to a garage then get a quote just incase so you know where you stand
