i have bought a new 37" samsung tv today, and i have ps3 and virgin hdmi inputs into the tv.
there is an optical out lead from tv to amplifier, but no sound coming out. if i have optical from ps3 to amplifier, it works in 5.1 fine, but goin from ps3 to tv via hdmi, then from tv to amplifier via optical out, there is nothing?!?
why?!?

Do you have to change the sound output on the TV? To output through optical instead of the TV speakers?

Erm, guess it should yeah, but if the tv outputs in stereo then in theory just 2 channel.
Can you change the sound to Dolby, from Virtual surround etc...?

Again, dunno then

why not just use hdmi to the tv and optical from the ps3 to the amp.
the V+ box doesnt actually send 5.1 singals any way so just using phono to the amp would be fine for that, well actually only bbc HD send 5.1 but every other chanel is two channel stereo.

because the bbc hd and all the on demand hd stuff is in 5.1. surely if a tv has an optical out, it should be sending out 5.1, if it is receiving a 5.1 source? my ps3 goin to tv via hdmi is playing dark knight blu-ray, so surely that should be sending out 5.2 from tv to amp??
i might have to make do with 2 channel for satellite

have a look in the instruction manual but a lot of tv's will not pass 5.1 for some reason, only the HD on demmand stuff is 5.1 i dont think you will be losing a great deal just going stereo for your virgin box.
could invest in a better amp with hdmi passthrough?
