I recently had broadband installed into my flat. The guy beneath me has asked if he can use my internet and pay a certain amount per month to me. He has said he only needs to use it a little to check emails etc. I know the guy a little and I'm fine with him doing that and the extra cash towards it would be nice. My only concern is if he uses it for more than he says.
My PC is wired to the router, I have only setup the wireless for his benefit. before I give him the password etc is there a way to limit his connectivity/speeds? Only to something that wont effect browsing/emails
Is this possible? Are there any other things I should be concerned about that I haven't thought about?

Depends what router you have, you might be able to install a new firmware (brain) for the router which has the ability to limit the speed.
Or you could install a piece of software on your mates PC.

No, not really.
I have looked into it recently and there's not an easy way of doing it with your current gear.
You could ring your ISP now and again and ask them if you're close to your limit. Say various family members use it and you wanted to check.

If your router has QoS (Quality Of Service) it can be set up to limit speeds, and in most routers you can limit access to certain days/time periods.
You can block certain port ranges or access to specific websites/IP addresses from most routers too using their built in firewalls.
However as Aaron has said if he downloads illegal porn/software etc. it will be you that would be done for it as the Internet connection is yours not his.
Can of worms etc.

Most of my routers you can select what ports each pc can use, as Sam said.
Easiest workaround for this would be just to only allow access to the following ports;
25, 110, 143, 465, 993, 995 (various email ports)
and
80 & 443 (http/s)
That way he can only access web pages and email as agreed and shouldn't be able to use P2P or torrents etc and blitz your connection (or get you into trouble).

Block the rapidshare domain too then. It's all doable.

he could also proxy over them ports to download stuff. Though if he hasnt broken into your AP already I doubt he knows how to do that! Brett's suggestion is a very good one and alot easier before you get into proxies n ting.

If he's going to he trouble of requesting permission and offering to pay towards it I wouldn't be too worried.
If the isp has a cap just keep your eye on it, you'd find out quickly enough if he was taking the piss.
You can stop him using it at any point.

Thanks for all the responses. I don't have a cap on the amount, I just don't particularly want him using up all my bandwidth because I download a fair amount myself.
I think I may look at Brett's suggestion of limiting some ports. Would I need to do this once he has connected to the network, I take it I would only have to do it the once and the setting would apply each time he connected?
Thanks

Yeah, once he's connected, you would usually just click on his PC name and adjust the settings.
The other way around it without him connecting first would be to set the defaults as just those ports I mentioned or even nothing at all, then open it up individually for each PC currently on the network.
As people have said, he sounds pretty legit and asking you as well as offering to pay. If I was your neighbour I'd just be getting it free right now and checking out your pics of your mrs naked on your network

In fact, you should have it all totally locked down as default anyway, just in case you get an unwanted visitor. Also make sure you're not using WEP.

I wouldn't even go to any trouble just take the money and thank him. If he has the common decency to offer in the first place he probably does only want to read his e-mails.

Get yourself some third party router firmware (depending on what router you have) i use routertech firmware.
This comes with little applications built in called netshaper and rshaper (iirc).
This will literally enable you to cap a static ip's speed to anything you want... for example on rshaper the command 192.168.1.6 32000 would cap 192.168.1.6 connection to 32000 bytes/s (32kb/s).

Maybe consider some sort of disclaimer stating he wont use it for anything bad etc? I dont know if this is legal - just an idea.

Agree with this tbh.
Otherwise recommend he gets mobile broadband or something and avoid the hassle paying someone else?
