e.g. 195/45/16
going from right to left the last bit is the wheel size in inches.
the next bit is the height of the tyre wall.
...
can somebody please explain the first set of numbers, ive heard it is hte width of the tyre, but how can the same wheel of 6.5" wide for example be able to accommodate the 195 and the 205?

width mate. I think because the tyres are rubber and fit both. not sure if it's as simple as that though.

it is tyre width, a 6.5 rim will be able to take a tyre of width between say 185 and 215, this difference is taken up by the lean in the tyre walls.

...also i think if you put 195's on a 6.5" the tyre will look flush with the alloy from the front but a 205 will give you the look when the tyre bows out wider then the wheel, if you get what i mean, this is not 100% but i think this is the case.

You guys are right, it is the width. But the number is in millimeters, so the difference between a 195 and a 205 is only 10mm that would be about 1/3 inch I think, thats why they fit.

Actuallt the second numbers are a percentage of the width of the wheel. So a 195/45 tyre has a sidewall that is 45% the width of the wheel. I think!
