im thinking of gettiN A PAIR FOR MY MAIN BEAM LIGHTS. THEY ARE 8000K AND GIVE A PURE WHITE LIGHT. i heard some hid lights are illegal.
is this true?

8000k don't give a pure white light, 4300k are closer to white.
Illegal unless you have self leveling, washers and lights designed for them.

In Short: All HIDs are illegal (even factory fitted)
Long answer:
they are legal in new cars as they are EU type approved and this trumps UK Law.
retrofitting is not strictly legal or illegal as there are no laws which specifically state that HIDs are illegal however there are also no laws which state that HIDs are legal
For new cars there needs to be an automatic headlight levelling system and headlight washers. the HIDs also need to be fitted into an HID suitable headlight assembly (usually a projector lens)
For retrofitting there is no requirement for any of the above however as I've already said its not stricly legal to fit them at all.
8000k will give a blue light and will be asking for a tug off the police in some areas
6000k can be a little blue and could be a problem
I would recommend 4300k as these are almost totally white.
I would also recommend fitting them into projector lens headlights as these will help to give a better beam and should reduce the chances off a pull
Ive got 4300k bulbs in projector lenses
you can see how much whiter they are than the yellowy foglights (which have halfords ultra white bulbs in!)

Also, the rules don't stipulate anything about retrofitting, the rules are standard across the board, you need exactly the same kit as factory fit.

there is nothing in the UK type approvals which specifically states that they are legal.
they are allowed however as the vehicles with them fitted are EU type approved and the UK cannot refuse to register a vehicle with is type approved for EU use.
maybe illegal was the wrong choice of word however technically they are NOT legal
EDIT For your edit: there is no requirement for projectors/levelling/washers for retrofitting as there is nothing in the UK regulations which makes retrofitting of HIDs legal

The only rules on its say you need self leveling, washers and a light unit designed for hids, it doesn't say anything about retrofitting or not.

Ok picky,
the higher the Kelvin rating the more intense the light is but visibility is reduced and doesnt travel as far,
the lower the kelvin rating the less intense it is, but is more visible and travels further

The colour temperature describes the colour and nothing else, 10000K just means it's purple.

Then its down to personal choice then, if someone wants a deeper colour then the higher up the range they can go ideally 8000k - 10000k therefore reducing the lumens produced.
If someone wants a more white colour then stay lower in the range 4000k - 6000k resulting in higher lumens.
Either way you look at it i pointed out about blinding drivers! Then as usual someone has to question it to look good 
I chose 10000k for personal preference
