whats this packets? is it a computer request? if you request the password thousands of times the other computer gives up and gives you it?

no, basically the implementation of the encryption of WEP was badly done, so you can exploit a weakness in it and crack it with a large amount of packets (about 15k of them).

The way to get loads of packets is to sit near their network and wait for a ARP request (ARP resolves mac addresses to ip addresses and vise versa). Once you have captured this ARP requested you can replay it to the access point as many times as you want and the computer will reply, thus generating more packets for you to capture to eventually crack.

Its not as easy as that, but if you have a google it will tell you the basic attack techniques for WEP.

Packets are pieces of data that get sent across the network.

A brute force attack goes through the full search space (basically a mathmatical algorithm) until eventually the correct pass is found. Messy and can be very slow.

Rob_Lee, using a cable, log onto your router, look at the wireless encryption and select WPA2. WPA2 is essentually WPA however doesnt use the TKIP algorithm that WEP and WPA use (which can easily be broken) [edit] As will has just described[/edit].

Backtrack is a linux distro.

WPA-PSK+WPA2-PSK is the best (unless you know nothing uses WPA), some stuff still doesn't use WPA2, like phones, so its better to have both turned on imo.

This should definitely be in geek day.

Sorry to hijack but I'm just going through this stuff you're on about but I'm getting a bit stuck on ^that point.

When ever I disable the broadcast my wireless disconnects and then won't pick it up again until I re-enable it yet when you find it through preferred networks and go into the properties, there's a tick box to connect even if the network isn't broadcasting which is ticked but it isn't working

If you disable broadcasts you may have to re-enter it manually on your wireless clients.
