Every so often the little network/Internet connection icon in the system tray will go from showing the normal two computers and globe icon (i.e. local and Internet connection) to just two computers only icon (local only connection) yet my Internet connection still works fine.

It annoys me in that I keep thinking my Internet connection is dropping but it hasn't.

Any Vista nerds know what might be causing this behaviour?

I'm using Vista 32-bit Premium SP2.

Sam are you sure that your internet connecting isnt dropping intermitantly even for just a couple of seconds at a time?

Ive seen this happen in Vista and there seems to be some lag with that icon in that its a little slow to react to changes in connection.

Well the router is literally next to my monitor and the DSL and 'Internet' LEDs are always green.

In fact just to double check I logged into the router admin and it says:

ADSL Link UP Time: 11 day 5 hour 15 min 16 sec

it's because vista/win7 checks the DNS to determine whether it's connected to the internet. I have it happening here on win7 every so often - pops up to say that there is not internet connection (although still an ethernet connection), yet the net works fine.

In the TCP/IP settings it's set to automatically obtain the IP and DNS addresses, would it be better to manually set this?

The router issues a static IP address to my PC anyway so it would never change.

As pow said, i don't think there is a solution as it's caused when it times out checking the DNS (i've also heard it checks with MS's own servers to determine an internet connection).

If it's bothering you, you could just hide the icon and then replace it with a net connection monitor.

Or just hide the icon and find out the internet is down when sites don't load.

I've got windows 7 and my internet has been dropping over last few days, this morning I couldn't get it to work at all. I phoned up Virgin who told me to restart modem etc which I had obviously done.
They then asked what browser I was using and told me they don't support firefox or explorer 8 and so that would be the problem. I was told that it would work if I installed explorer 7, which isn't even compatible with 7!. Luckily internet randomly started working again this afternoon

What a lot of tosh that is

What has the browser got to do with whether the internet connection works or not.

Fair enough them saying they don't offer support for IE8 but saying it's not compatible
