After looking on eBay there are some cables that are like £5 delivered which would be i just want to make sure it will work, would be good to have the sound through the TV too..
This is the only port i can see on my laptop(Dell Inspiron 17):
And these are the only ports on my TV:

You need a DVI to VGA adapter (The white square socket on the TV) and then a VGA to VGA cable (laptop to adapter > tv). Then a 3.5mm jack cable from headphone socket on laptop to line in on the TV

had the same problem but its piss easy.
i already had the wire that goes from the pc to my tv which is the one that has the screw in parts at each end. (video only)
i then bought a 3.5mm jack to 3.5mm jack from amazon for 61p + 81p delivery and connect that to my pc and tv for sound

If your TV has a VGA input thats the easiest option.. As Pow says you can get DVI -> VGA adaptors thats the next best option.
If your laptop is modern and pretty well spec'd it should have an HDMI plug which would obviously be the best way to go

HDMI cables take the sound as well don't they so you don't need a separate aux cable?
