If you apply for a credit card and get turned down does this affect your credit rating?

I've never had any problems getting credit before and never got myself in trouble with money but got turned down for a credit card. I already have one so its not the end of the world. They must of realised they wont make much, if any money out of me.

Just wondered if it'll look bad that I was turned down.

Won't look bad unless you continue doing it.

Some cards are stupidly difficult to get accepted for.

Won't look bad if you only do it once as it only shows as a search on your credit file, not whether you passed or were declined.

I only applied once. Not going to apply again, didn't actually need it anyway.

Thanks.

Sign up to Experian Credit Expert, they have a service on there that can match up suitable cards/loans etc. to you based on the lender's criteria and what's on your credit file.

Forget about paying for credit scores, you can get one for free at http://www.checkmyfile.com/score.asp .

The credit matching service I posted previously is free if you pay for the £6.99/month credit file thing (you can get a 30 day free trial, so do that then cancel before the 30 days if you don't want to pay).

I just paid a fee to experian - something silly like £2.50 and they sent me out a copy of the report by post. Not signed up for anything/free 30 days or any of that shite.

Yeah there is that as well. I prefer the subscription service though as it alerts me to any changes in my credit file whereas with the traditional method you use there is no way of knowing immediately.

No worries. Thing is even if you use the £5.95 credit score offering from Experian it's still going to be the same sort of generic rating anyway, because each lender has their own scoring criteria, however the checkmyfile.com service is free and gives you a pretty good indication - and you can use that £5.95 for buying a pint or two for example.
