go to a site called majorgeeks.com and search for a programme called IObit security, this has a part called advance system care which speeds up vista

You need to find out why it's slow.
Is it downloading updates?
Do you have malware/spyware???

We're talking about slow running, not transfer speeds I don't think.
You want speedtest.net anyway.

Just double-click/right-click on the network icon in the taskbar and go through the various properties pages until you get to one where you can see the data being sent/received.
