Ok so i've been downloading a few films in HD that are .mkv format but when playing them through my WD Media Player Theres no sound.
Any Ideas whats up?

i found this too.... i dont think the WD media player fully supports mkv.
Its the same with some mp4 files if they are encoded with h264.
The best way is to recode them yourself to mp4/avi.

oh, just realised it was a standalone player.
according to the latest firmware upgrade it now supports more mkv audio:

Update the WD Firmware, should support most codecs now  And only re-encode if you need to, as it'll take a while....

WD00AVP is the first gen model, this is the page you want - http://www.wdc.com/en/products/wdtv/index.asp?wdc_lang=en
Shouldn't take that long to load, although i'd be warry about turning it off/resetting the player mid updating the firmware. Might be worth a quick google and see if anyone else has had issues

Edit - From a quick google, people are saying it's better to unplug all other drives and just use a USB stick with the firmware update on. Also an update can take anything from a few minutes to 20 minutes.

yeah I tried to update using my 1TB external HDD seems they dont like doing it with them, managed to find out how to reset it after it frooze and updating it off a usb pen, cheers mate

If not then you're only options are to get the film again but in a different format (or encoded with different codecs) or re-encode the film yourself to something that is compatible, although this can take a while (many hours, depending on computer spec and how you're re-encoding - multiple passes etc)

The first version of the WDTV player doesn't downmix DTS audio to stereo, it's only the second version.
Xtreamer, popcorn hour a110 and as mentioned, the second version supports DTS downmixing.
