OK well I don't have a Corsa SRi 8v but I have a mk3 Astra with the same engine in it as the SRi 8v (C14SE), and I was wondering, when you changed the cam belt did you need to change anything else ie. pre-tensioner, water pump?

My car has done 60k miles (on the original cam belt)!

Cheers,

Sam

60K on the original belt?? Sam I would advise you get that changed asap. I had a 1400 Astra on a "P" plate with about 35K on it, the belt went on that. Luckilly it was only a few bent valves, but could be very costly.

change the water pump. The water pump is also the tensioner. Make sure its tighened up properly (3 bolts). Make sure engine is lined up properly since the cam pulley has to come off.

So change the cam belt, pre-tensioner and water pump. What about the thermostat, does this need to be changed at the same time too? Someone on MIG suggested I change this at the same time?

the thermostat is behind the cambelt cover so you might as well change it whilst the belt is off.

Cheers for everyone's help.

Well for the cam belt, pre-tensioner, water pump, and thermostat from Vauxhall, the total bill comes to £130

Oh well...

That actually don't sound toobad for Vauxhall parts. You could save a few quid by getting a pattern waterpump.

£130 is spot on from vauxhall, but you could take it to another non-dealer garage & get it done for under £100

£130 is just for the parts only by the way... I was thinking of getting a local garage to do the job with the bits I'm thinking of buying from Vauxhall, but he wants about £80 to do the job!

By pattern pump, I mean a non GM one. You should be able to pick one up from a motor factors for a lot less than you would pay at the Vauxhall parts counter.

just make sure you buy a GM timing belt!!

£80 is about right, say 2 hrs labour & then VAT

i always supply the parts for my car when i leave it down at the garage where i get work done on it. least that way you know what's being put on it

Wouldn't a GM pump last longer than a non-GM one though?

Sam, half the time the pattern part is exactly identical to the genuine item. They are often made in the same factory, just put in a different carton. Trust me.

Oh right. So do you reckon someone like Halfords would sell the pump then? What I could do I suppose is buy the pump from there and get the cam belt, pre-tensioner and thermostat from Vauxhall? (thermostat from VX is only £6.66 + VAT).

Halfords might do them but personally I don't find Halfords cheap. Take a look in your Yellow Pages under Motor Factors, you should find quite a few locally to you.

yeah motor factors rule!!! when timin belt snapped on my engine same 1400 8V had to replace valves, over 30 quid each in vauxhall for inlet valve an 45 quid each for exhaust valves, 9 quid a piece in the motor factors and still goin strong as is the water pump and other parts i got off them

I phoned up Partco in Oxford this morning, they quoted me £14 + VAT for the water pump whereas Vauxhall want £40.15 + VAT for it! Is that a good price (@ Partco I mean)?

I think I will just get the cam belt, pre-tensioner and thermostat from Vauxhall but get the water pump from Partco.
