Need a new comp.

Been ages since i built my comp so cant rememebr everything, can someone check this out and see if it will all go together, anything I could change, anything ive missed?

Need a decent pc that will last me a good number of years, mainly for personal usage like games and media.

I was thinking of getting 2 GTX's and putting them in SLI but think that might be a tad overkill? Or I might wait a bit and get the new GTX470 when they come out.

Things like monitor and case were just a quick pick atm so would proberly change, was just to give me an idea of price.

if yu can stretch abit..

get the asus rampage II extreme board and that will mean you can get rid of your XFi extreme card as the rampage board has one (not on board, but just as you was going to buy it)

and i would also go for the Corsair H50 water cooling kit (dead easy, wont leak)

Yeh the rampage does look like a better buy tbh.

If I can be bothered so learn how to plumb in water cooling that would be an option as it just looks

but does it actually lower temps much more over fan based cooling? Or is it more for show? I know its a lot quieter though which is a bonus.

2x ATI 5850's would be cheaper then the above and would knock and 470/480 out of the water.

with the H50 no plumbing is required, and yea, it drops the temps considerably.

Get a single 5870. You can add another in 6 months if you wanted. Better than getting two 5850s and wasting both slots

Here's my new build:

I haven't decided on the GFX card yet. Any suggestions?

Also, is 8gB really worth it? How likely is it to get used over 4gB RAM?

AMD

May I direct you toward http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

The CPU you are buying is £141.56inc. vat. It scores 4299 on CPU benchmark. It sucks at overclocking.

For the money you are spending, you are best off going i7 930 which will overclock to feck, and scores 5852 on CPU benchmark as standard. When overclocked, it can hit 7649

This, is what I think you should buy. Also - stuff the 2TB drive - you will get better performance with 2 x 1TB drives in RAID0, and you arent bothered by redundancy in the fact you were only going to buy 1 drive anywhoo

As far as graphics cards go - depends what you wanna do. If your an avid gamer, buy a high end card such as an ATI 5850/5870. If you just want decent graphics without the cost, buy an ATI 5770. Personally, ATI drives me feckin insane due to shoddy drivers but they are definatly the winners at the moment.

Also if you want complete silence - you may want to revisit your cooling options

eh?

GTX470 = £300ish

Cheapest 5850 I can find at the moment is £225. That's still £450 for a dual GPU solution plus the additional cost of PSU power, and cooling overhead

The benchmarks for the GTX470's look interesting - seems they are struggling to keep up with the 5870's but only time will tell..... drivers are probably shit at the moment too.

Chris, is this just a single CPU cooler unit, which requires no additional equipment what so ever? I hate my CPU fan and want something quiet, however I dont have any water cooling what so ever.

The H50 is a complete sealed unit - what you see in the picture is all there is to it.

On the back of the rad is a 120mm fan and thats the only prereq - to have a 120mm exhaust fan mount on the rear of your case.

The pump is integrated into the block - and the power connects to the standard CPU fan control on your mobo.

It's a really tidy piece of kit. I got the Domino A.L.C. just before this came out and mine is pants in comparison
