Why don't they just make their phone / pad support flash???

They are massively ant-competitive which is the main reason.
They give excuses about performance but the real reason is they want to control every bit of content and get a slice of the pie from every bit of content.
Court's in America are currently looking into it.

Although whatever they say I still firmly believe that it is because it lets people play games etc over the internet rather than an appstore game.
Also tho I didnt realise a lot of manufacturers etc are mainly supporting HTML 5 for the future and the codec H.264
