Aunty & Uncle want a new TV and they dont have a clue so they've got me looking for them. They've got a 37" Sony Bravia at the moment but moved that in to the snug as its not quite big enough so they're after a 40" or 42" this time.
Tesco seem to have a few for £500ish which I was surprised about, thought you'd struggle to get a 40+ for that money.
Are they all much of a muchness around this price?

I'd be inclined to go with this Sony 40", Samsung or Panasonic 42"
Are Plasma going out of fashion now? Any others I should be looking at?

my personal opinion would be to spend that sort of money on a smaller better quality screen.
42" £500 TV wont be that great.

It'll be fine for them.
If it was me buying a 42" I'd be looking at spending at least double that amount but thats me.

A Panny G10 is around the £500 mark and is a brilliant plasma for the money. Panny G15/X10 (X10 doesn't support 1080p though) or the LG-PQ6000 also get decent reviews for around the £500/600 price range.
I would say have a look on Avforums and ask on there
