Took the head off the car today, rocker gasket leakage and fucked valve stem seals have caused a fair build-up of shit on two of the pistons. Whats best to clean them, petrol? And should I clean the pistons when they are in the block?

I used carb cleaner on mine to clear the carbon, was bit expensive looking back but worked a treat!

Do NOT clean them in the block, the particles will drop into the P2B clearances and enhance wear.
Take the sump off, undo the rod bolts and take the pistons out. Re-ring, measure the bores and if suitable re-fit. Clean with a medium 400's grade wet and dry.

Just put two pistons to TDC and stuff rags down the other two. Clean with a wire brush, wipe down with a rag then squirt a little oil in the bore and turn the engine by hand - any shite that's fallen down gets pushed up above the level of the head and can be wiped away with ease.
