Why do banks have so many flipping rules and T&C's around them!
1st choice is Santander, but as my main account is with them (which I want to keep open), I have to close it to open the student account
2nd choice is Barcaays, but you need to have a current account with them already to get the student account!
All I want the account for is big, interest free overdraft!

Just checked them and it goes up in stages now, max of 1k in first year
I want the overdraft in one lump to invest, but also as a fall back if something fucks up on the car (ie turbo or clutch!)

Invest in what?
Unless it's high risk you won't be making any money.

ISA's, I've got a bit of savings to put in an ISA, will earn a few hundred quid over the year, which can go towards car insurance

Are you sure an ISA will earn a few hundred quid in a year and not about a fiver?

ISA rate is only 2.5% so unless its a whopping sum of money you really wont be earning much from it at all. Not enough to negate any unexpected overdraft costs anyway...

£3600 (the max you can put in an ISA in a tax year) at 2.5% (that's generous by the way) will earn you £79.20.
Hardly worth moving a shit load of money for and ending up in the red over.

Halifax, you can get upto 3k interest free ovd but only when your in your third year, can get about £1200 first year but it all depends on account conduct and how you fund it, minimum £400 per quarter. You also get a year after graduation to pay it off interest free.
