Had a laptop's for the past 8 years or so; but now moving home and having a dedicated office set up as i currentley work from home once a week but looking to extend this further. I am a software developer but connect to work via there web desktop; but do also use Visual Studio and SQL Express on my own PC so need some performance but nothing major. I have a dual screen setup at work which does work well for what i do; so would like that at home. Dont really use it for gaming or watching films so no need to go to town on Graphics etc...

I fancy having a go at building something myself but not really sure where to start looking and what sort of money it should cost?m Any ideas or guidance would be good

If you're buying the bits to build it yourself, i recommend eBuyer and Overclockers.

Add to that scan.co.uk, Dabs.com. But as said, an off the shelf Dell will happily do what you want.
