the other half has bought a new wireless laptop and forgotten the secure network key (i presume this is the same as the password she placed on the internet) for the router used on the family desktop pc

is there anyway to reset the password or bypass the password?

If you haven't changed the login password on the router you don't need to reset anything, just login and you'll be able to see what the key is as it's written in plain text in the config settings.

Not always the case, it certainly didn't display the key on my netgear likewise it doesn't on my linksys.

You can retrieve the hash key from another wireless device that has previously accessed that router (like the old laptop or another wireless system) - under windows you can use WirelessKeyView (google it, first link).

Which Netgear is that, Dom?

I had to change the security settings for my mother-in-law's new Netgear router (think it's a DG834 or whatever) and that was in plain text.

Was an old WGT624 from what i remember, the hash key was starred out in the textbox (the actual textbox valued was starred as well so you couldn't even do a 'view source' on the page).

If you can log in and its not shown, just change it and make sure you write it somewhere safe. Re add any devices that you may have.

What are you struggling with? Logging into the router or accessing the Wireless?

As has been said just log in to the router with the Defult Admin/Admin etc then change/View the Wireless key.

find your gateway IP by going to cmd.exe and typing ipconfig then type that in address bar, go there, login to router (if you forgot that pwd then you need to reset router, tiny button on the router), then go to wireless security or whatever and change the pwd

Plug the router in and open the router control panel.

If you can't read it, change it and update all the clients.

If you can't get in the router, make sure you have credentials for the net connection before you reset the router. Otherwise you'll end up with a great network and no uplink.
