The stopcock in my mums house is basically screwed. When the water is on it leaks and when the water is turned off it isn't fully off.
Looking at the stopcock it seems to be lead one side and then runs to copper the otherside. I can't figure out if it's lead but it definitely isn't compression and has been there donkeys years.
Is there anyway of replacing the stopcock without the need to use a burner?

Local water company should do it if its leaking, worth giving them a call.

Get a Leadlock. Its basically a compression fitting for lead with normal compression - 15/22mm on the other end
Make sure you get the right weight though could do with cutting a piece of the lead out and taking it to the shop

get a 7lb leadlock, if its a 9 you need you can always shave the lead down to 7lb
that is of course if its not posible to take some to the shop, the majority of lead mains are 7lb though
then you want to go out into the street and find a little square grid, open it and inside will be a stop tap, make sure its fully off before you go messing with the positive side of the stop tap inside
I can guarantee that when you open the square little grid it will be full of soil and leaves and general shite, you will have to dig it out if this is the case. and then when you do fint it, its highly likely that you wont be able to reach it, and then if you can reach it will be too stiff to turn, in both cases you will then need a stop tap key, basicaly a big T bar with a formed end on it to fit over the stop tap handle
in summary, its a horrible job to do and I wish you the best of luck

Cheers mate
I switched it off from the street the other day when swapping the kitchen sink. I had to shut it off from outside after finding out the internal stopcock was goosed.
Once the water is off how hard is it to fit the lead lock?

Urmston and it just clamps to the pipe and electronically freezes it. If you touch the clamps you pretty much stick to it

Sounds like fun
So I have to remove all the sealer around the joints of the stop cock. Hacksaw the lead side and use a pipe cutter on the copper side.
Trim the lead pipe to fit the lead lock and compression fit some copper pipe, then fit a 15mm compression stop cock?

You dont have to remove any sealer just cut it underneath it. Apart from that yes exactly

Ah so chop out the stop cock and some length of the lead past the sealer?
I reckon i'll try and free the gland off the tap as it's seized to the tap. I think this is why it's leaking.

Yup it's on the boundaries so our responsibility.
I'm going to tackle it myself after I've decorated my own house. Looking at the main stopcock outside it is for more than just our house. Am I allowed to shut it off to repair my stopcock and for how long?

No it's just a tap down a hole. Will it be for the full row of 6 houses?

I haven't looked further up the row but the tap for our house is right in the middle of us and the next door neighbour.
I'll knock on and let them know when I do it.
