Think my laptop is fucked.
When it starts up it's as if it's the first time I've ever used XP. There's still icons of programs I've downloaded but it's like the first time they've been opened as well. All my FM saved games are no longer there according to FM and all the downloaded files aren't there according to uTorrent and the download folder has dissapeared but all the files can be found by searching.
Is the HD fucked or is it something else?

Your "profile" is fucked. Just create a new user in Control Panel and use that instead.

Aye sounds like it's going into a temporary profile.
Can you go into 'c:\documents and settings\Paul' and all your stuff that should be there, desktop icons and my docs etc?

If you type it in manually it shows the download folder etc... aye but not if you just click 'my documents' as normal.
Every time it's restarted it's coming up 'thanks for installing Avast' and offering a tour of Windows as well

It's because your profile is corrupt.

Could also probably change it in the registry so you can go back into that one.
You've got more than one account on that laptop haven't you.
Login as kevin or somebody rename documents and settings\paul to paul.old, login as paul again, logout, login as kevin, copy contents of paul.old to paul, log back in as paul.
Get all that

Link above isn't working though because when I've located the old my documents and settings and open it, the folders like 'downloads' aren't there

Nah there was only 1 but I've created a couple of others now. I'll give that a bash.

I've just had this exact thing happen with my laptop! But all I did was log off and log on again and it's started working again.

Rub a banana skin on it, followed by tooth paste, and then tomato sauce. Then clean it all off. Should sort it.
