as in the title really, we have a mac thats connected directly to a wireless bt home hub via ethernet cable and my laptop usually connects via the wi fi. The signal strength is full as always and it connects fine, yet the internet is so slow... but on the directly connected mac the speed is as fast as usual. any ideas? ive never had this problem before its only just started

Ethernet (wired) connections will ALWAYS be faster and more reliable than WiFi.
Best thing to do is go on the http://www.speedtest.net website and run one test from your laptop, and another from the Mac, and then compare the results (or tell us).
It could also be that your laptop may be downloading Windows or other software updates as soon as it detects a net connection, this will obviously slow things down for you.

How would I go about doing that Russ? Or is it a Mac thing actually?

You change it in the router settings.

As Sam says the ethernet connection will be quicker, but I also agree with Russ that testing each WiFi channel can also help
