ive downloaded a few bluray films, does anyone know how to get them to work on the ps3 ?? do i need to put it on a disc

Use software called 'PS3 Mediaserver', it's awesome and I use it to stream bluray downloads to the console.
You can get bet quality through a wired connection than over wireless though.

is there no way of converting it and putting it on a usb pen and playing it then ?

Its far easier to do as Tom says and use PS3 media server. It will play them without any conversion etc.

I use some software called mkv2vob - that's quite good at converting mkv files for use on the PS3
It is a little bit slow though.

I used to use gotsent for converting hd stuff, worked well.
I now use ps3mediaserver to stream them instead
