I need a new laptop, had a quick look at some today.
Are the Intel i3/5/7 range the best processors to go for? From my limited knowledge there seems to be a lot of old/crap processors in loads of laptops at the moment?

The Core i3/5/7 range are the latest ones from Intel yes.
Just avoid Celeron for Intel and Sempron for AMD as they are budget CPUs.

normally the cpu in most of todays 'laptops' are more than enough for 95% of most people ... if u follow the advice of the previous post.
Its the GPU (graphics) that you would want to look into... UNLESS you dont want to play any games that require even the smallest amount of intense graphical processing.
If you want to game, find a laptop with a dedicated GPU.
If not, dont worry.

I use my laptop for internet browsing, word/excel/powerpoint, photo editing and graphic desiging (Fireworks), video editing (Premiere Elements), Vagcom, DVDs/films and I want to get Catia (cad software)

Any laptop (not netbook) will run all of that with no problems, if you want to use CAD software, (im sure you already know) but in general the 'bigger' the screen size the better.

Just had a quick look and V6 (i believe this is the newest) seems to run on a minimum of an old P4 with 512mb ram.
If you use V5 its a minimum of a PIII and 256mb ram.
This is ancient tech + most laptops today come with probably a dual core cpu and 2GB as standard.
It did say that 1280x1024 is the minimum graphics resolution though which may prove to be a problem.

That was for XP though, but i cannot imagine Win7 being too different... Maybe vista.

There's no need to be a sciolist about it. You need to do more than just open up the software and be able to look through the menus.

I dont see a problem posting the softwares minimum requirements. I did this to illustrate the fact it would actually run on most laptop 5-6 years ago which should prove no problem for todays laptops even in the budget range. What else i posted about it needing 1280x1024 i believe should also be useful. If you know different then bring something useful to the thread.

I know you can't have any old thing for Catia, it takes ages to load on the uni computers! TBH I know I need something good for video editing too

I have never had any experience with catia personally but are you sure its not taking ages to load because its maybe being run from the network, or even worse virtualised? I know all software at my uni is virtualised and loading times are shit even for things like office. Personally i would go for a desktop for work related cad / video editing. That of course may not be an option for you.

Im swinging towards the Acer, its smaller, lighter but Im unsure on the UMA graphics? It also has more USB ports, bluetooth and better ethernet connection

Both should run it fine except you might want to check the minimum requirement for screen resolution. Both those laptops are probably WXGA resolution (1360/1366x768), apparently you need at least SXGA which is a different aspect ratio and (1280x1024) to run catia...

I ended up going for the Acer, its smaller, lighter, better battery, more USB's and a little nicer looking.

Ok the one that stands out there to me is the 6GB of ram recommended... Thats a fair bit of ram! Also looking at the gfx cards it looks like you might need a high end one of those too.. Might be worth you printing that off and going to PC world and asking what they have in stock that will match or exceed these requirements.
