Is there any way of getting around their £50 HD "activation fee"?

Just blag it! Say you've seen something similar with Sky and they said they'd do the activation for Free (or half price) etc etc

Freeview it is then!
Seriously though, don't Sky increase their prices quite regularly?
Sky are a few quid cheaper in comparison to the services I'd want from Virgin TBF, but then Virgin offer fibre optic broadband which is something Sky do not.

Had cable (TV/Net/Phone) 10/11 years, had one issue in that time. I know people that have had Sky and have had serious problems. Doesn't make either shit, it's just luck of the draw.
However, I would state that I’d keep clear of their ADSL; I’ve never had it but from VM and Cableforums forums/newsgroups, general consensus is that they are shite
Regarding picture quality, Sky HD vs VM HD is near enough the same (although a lot of people prefer the scaler in the V+ box over Sky's HD box, but personally i can't tell the difference); for SD, VM use a higher resolution (704/720x576) over Sky (544x576) and the VM (using the V+ box, scaler comes into play though) clearly provides the better picture.
Technically Freeview beats both platforms on bitrates though.....
Edit -

Not entirely true, it all depends if you're in an area where the UBR is oversubscribed (common issue if there is one) and even then this doesn't guarantee that you'll have a cack (spikes/packet-loss/high pings etc) connection.
But it isn't any different to having an oversubscribed (ADSL) exchange, which can cause similar issues.
Best thing to do is look on cableforums.co.uk/VM Forums, search for you area and find out if there are issues with your local UBR. No doubt there are similar forums for ADSL where you can find out if your local exchange is likely to be oversubscribed.

disagree, their standard router is FUCKING SHITE. But their actual connection isn't bad, the router can't handle the requests and freezes

Only standard issue you get now is that you'll be stuffed with a SuperHub (basically an all in one cable modem and Netgear router) if you want a (cabled) BB package higher than 20Mb, which is riddled with firmware issues.

It's only FTTC (Fibre to the Cab; coax from cab to property) and there is pros and cons to both platforms.

Funny you should mention the Super Hub, I was at a customer's house the other week removing some malware from his PC due to him looking at too much porn, once I sorted that out he told me that ever since he had the new Super Hub installed he couldn't get wireless working - the Virgin Connection Manager or whatever kept popping up so I just completely closed the program and his wireless worked (it didn't whilst it was open)?

No idea, i don't have a SuperHub (have a Cisco modem). Although i'm not sure why he had VM software installed, the SuperHub doesn't require any from my knowledge (ethernet to computer, online register/activation).

There's a couple of options to turn off on the SuperHub which improve things. There's a firmware update due some point in May to improve it.
Wouldn't go back to Sky unless I had to, especially with the new Tivo service.
