heres a list of the hardware on my desk:
Sony BRAVIA 40" LED 3D tv
PS3
XBOX
Panasonic 5.1 home cinema system.
The set up:
PS3, xbox & hcs all plugged into bravia via hdmi cable.
hcs has audio input from AUX cable ( plugged into headphone jack )
The problem:
firstly you should note that im having some remote controll issues atm ( bought the hcs on saturday and it came with the wrong remote. returned the remote and they couldnt find the correct one so handed me one they thought would work. it works some functions and allowed me to go through the innitial setup process but other than that its useless, got a refund for the remote and should be recievinga new one from panasonic in a few days)
but my bravia tv seems to be able to control the volume and some other functions using the sony remote.
after setting up the system i powered up my ps3 to check out the audio quality of GT5 in 5.1
was a bit dissapointed as i was only getting some turbo whistle sound coming from my rear speakers & no engine sound from my car from any of the speakers, but getting other drivers engine sound through front speakers only.
i then played some music through the playstation and it came out of all the speakers fine.
then went to the tv and watched a film with sound coming from the rear speakers as well as the front.
yesterday came to play gt5 but this time no sound at all from the rear speakers.
checked out the tv, same again, no sound through the rear.
i then played a dvd using the hcs itself and got perfectly clear surround sound .
tryed playing the same dvd in the playstation but only getting sound through the front speakers.
im getting confused and running out of things to try untill my new remote turns up.
any help would be great.

Aux via headphone socket wont be 5.1 sound. You need to take a digital (optical) from your PS3 to your surround sound decoder/amp.

You're only getting stereo if the only connection to the home cinema is a plug into the headphones.

there is no optical port on the hcs though.. only a red and a white aux input
there is an optical input on the back of the tv though. would that be worth a try?

It won't work. No. You need optical in on the HCS
when you get the proper remote you'll obviously have more options, you might be able to get sound from all speakers using PrologicII. I believe that generates 5.1 from a Stereo source?
