It depends on the Blu-ray. But to answer your question, yes -- it is.
And yes, of course you can -- it supports both the HD codecs too.

It won't be HD through optical, but it's HD through HDMI (as long as your AV receiver can handle LPCM through HDMI). Optical doesn't have the bandwidth to handle 24Mbps audio.

i just bought new sony surround with optical in from ps3-it is fucking immense sound!
